A LIFE DEDICATED TO MUSIC,
A LIFE THAT LASTS FAR BEYOND DEATH.
Vienna – Oct 17, 2023
Hatto Beyerle, one of the great musicians and teachers in classical music, of the last 70 years has died at the age of 90.
After studying violin at the mdw with Ricardo Odnopossoff, composition with Alfred Uhl and conducting with Hans Swarowski as well as viola with Ulrich Koch in Freiburg, the co-founder of several ensembles and violist of the Alban Berg Quartet made music worldwide with the greats of classical music. He has been a formative teacher, horizon-opening mentor and ever-curious companion for generations of successful musicians. Winner of many awards, he was professor of viola and chamber music at the mdw from 1964 to 1987, and has also taught as professor at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, the Basel Music Academy and the Scuola di Musica Fiesole, as well as guest lecturer at numerous institutions and renowned festivals.
Hatto Beyerle was a teacher at the chamber music courses of the isa – International Summer Academy of the mdw every year from 2005 to 2023.
With the ECMA, the European Chamber Music Academy, the visionary and versatile music thinker and great humanist founded an initiative that has developed over the past 20 years into the most important continuing education network for the top professional chamber music talents in Europe. Active to the end, Hatto Beyerle passed away on Oct. 16 after a short, serious illness.
The isa will always remember Hatto Beyerle with gratitude and honour.
