Welcome to isa26 at the mdw campus in Vienna.
For 35 years, the International Summer Academy of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna has created a space where young artists from around the world come together to deepen their artistic excellence. What defines isa is not only that, but the encounter of different experiences, traditions, and ways of thinking about music and arts.
This year’s theme, global–local, speaks directly to the realities shaping artistic work today. Music emerges from specific places, histories, and communities, yet it constantly crosses borders. isa26 explores this dynamic through artistic practice, research, and dialogue – from masterclasses and performances to the Music City Lab across Vienna.
In the 10th anniversary year of the mdw’s Exilarte Center, a special focus on music by people who were persecuted or murdered by the Nazi regime reminds us that artistic voices are never detached from social and political realities. Artistic freedom, openness, and responsibility remain essential foundations of our work. We here at the mdw are convinced that artistic excellence can only emerge in connection with values that are non-negotiable for us: the protection of the dignity and rights of every human being.
I wish all participants inspiring encounters, artistic growth, and the courage to explore new perspectives.
